Sam awoke with a start as a rumble of thunder nearly shook the bedroom it was so loud. He quickly realised there was nothing to worry about and snuggled back into the bed, reaching his arm out to wrap around a familiar form only to find nothing.
That’s when he began to panic.
His eyes shot open and his sat up, squinting in the dark to try and find you.
“(Name)?” He called out, his voice rough from sleep.
Sam’s eyes landed on the small slither of light that glowed under the door that connected the bedroom to the bathroom, staring at it for a few moments before it widened as it opened.
“Sam?” you said softly. Your heart broke at the look on his face, it was the most tragic thing you had ever seen- full of worry and panic.
“I-I thought-” he began but trailed off, unable to list off all the things he thought could have happened to you.
“Oh Sam” You walked over to the bed and pulled him into your chest “I just went to try and calm down. I can’t sleep through thunderstorms” You gently ran your fingers through his hair.
“You should have woken me.” Sam looked up at you with his kind hazel eyes, pulling you onto his lap “I can’t sleep without you next to me, without knowing you’re safe”
You curled up against his warm, firm chest, resting your head against the crook of his neck.
“We’ve got a day off tomorrow, we’ll just stay up and wait out the storm together” His voice was a low hum that vibrated through his body and into yours.
You nodded and were about to say something when a loud crack of lighting struck, causing you to whimper.
“Shh. Don’t worry” Sam whispered, stroking your back gently “I promised to protect you from everything, right?” He smiled and tapped the wedding ring on your finger.
“Yeah” you agreed.
“That was the best day of my life, you know” Sam grinned, obviously trying to distract you from the storm “Just knowing that you would be by my side for the rest of my life”
You nodded silently and allowed him to continue.
“I thought my heart was going to fall out when I saw you at the end of the aisle…Everything was so beautiful…I wish I could relive it”
Sam went on and on, retelling tales of different milestones in your relationship.
“When I first met you, I couldn’t get you out of my mind.” He chuckled “I thought I was going crazy”
“No” you said smally “Dean thought you were going crazy”
Sam gave a small laugh that that “Well, I certainly drove him crazy when asking him how I should propose”
The two of you talked the night away, reminiscing as he held you close.
Slowly but surely, the rain lessened and sky was left covered in dusty grey clouds.
You pressed your lips against Sam’s and smiled “Thanks for waiting up with me”
“Well I wasn’t going to let you stay up on your own, was I?” He smirked slightly and kissed your forehead “Now get some sleep” Sam said but instead of letting you roll off him, Sam just leant back until he was lying down with you against his chest.
“I love you, Sam”
“I know. I love you too”.
